Veli Ground which literally means an open space in Malayalam is one of Fort Kochi’s pride and have hosted several events. One of the main attractions of the ground is the big tree which is decorated during Christmas/New year season. The ground hosts Cochin Carnival every year during that time and a number of tourists come here to be a witness to the grand festive celebration. According to local sources, Veli ground had been a 13-acre land having more than 60 man-made ponds which were used by washermen community who originally hailed from Tamil Nadu. They were called Vannans. But these ponds were later filled up and we see the ground as it is now.
