Fort Emmanuel

Address: Fort Kochi, Kochi, Kerala 682001
Where is that Fort that proudly gave the city the first part of its name? To answer the above question, we point to the remains of the demolished Fort Emmanuel which can be seen at the beach in Fort Kochi today.
The fort was built in the first decade of the 16th century and named after the then king of Portugal, King Manuel I. But the fort was demolished by the Dutch after they conquered Cochin in 1806.
The remains of the fort are submerged under water for most part of the year but are visible occasionally. The below picture was taken at such a time.
